Screening Mammogram
wHAT IS A SCREENING MAMMOGRAM
A screening mammogram is the most effective tool for detecting breast cancer early, often before symptoms appear. At Suffolk Breast Imaging, we provide advanced 3D mammography enhanced with artificial intelligence, helping radiologists detect cancers earlier and more accurately.
3D Mammography
During a 3D mammogram, our imaging system captures multiple images of the breast from different angles, creating a three-dimensional picture of the breast tissue. This is different from traditional 2D mammography which only takes two, flat images of each breast. 3D mammography allows our doctors to examine the breast tissue in more detail, layer by layer, making your mammogram results more accurate.
Profound AI detection
ProFound Detection is the first FDA-approved artificial intelligence software for 3D mammography. The latest version, ProFound Detection V4, provides a 50% improvement in identifying hard-to-find cancers, especially in dense breast tissue. By analyzing your current and previous mammograms, it highlights the smallest changes that might otherwise go unnoticed. Our expert radiologists always review your imaging and use this technology as a supplemental tool.
Suffolk Breast Imaging combines 3D Mammography with ProFound Detection V4, two highly advanced breast cancer screening technologies, to give our patients the highest quality of care possible.
Why Choose Mammograms with Profound AI?

Enjoy a More Comfortable Mammogram
Upon arriving at your appointment, opt in to any of these additional services to make your mammogram more comfortable.
SmartCurve Paddles
As an early adopter of the SmartCurve system, we are committed to providing the most comfortable imaging experience possible. SmartCurve uses curved compression paddles that follow the natural shape of the breast, reducing pinching, and discomfort some women feel with traditional flat paddles.
Attention: SmartCurve paddles will not work for all breast types. It is up to the discretion of our technologists to determine if the paddles are right for you during your exam.
Bella Blanket
The Bella Blanket is a thin, protective covering that sits between the breast and the mammography machine.
This technology is best for patients who:
- experience pinching, sticking, or skin irritation
- want a sanitary barrier between their skin and the mammography machine
- are sensitive to the temperature of the machine
MammoPad Cushion
MammoPad Cushions are soft, latex-free, foam pads that are placed between the breast and the mammography machine. Studies show MammoPad cushions can reduce discomfort by 50%.
This technology is best for patients who:
- experience pain from pressure
- would like increased support and cushioning
- are sensitive to the temperature of the machine

frequently asked questions about screening Mammograms
For women of average risk, annual screening mammograms are recommended starting at age 40. However, in New York State, Shannon’s Law requires large group insurers to cover annual screening mammograms beginning at age 35, allowing women to start screening earlier if they choose.
If you have a family history or other risk factors, your healthcare provider may recommend starting earlier. Please consult your primary healthcare provider to determine when breast cancer screening should begin for you.
An annual mammogram increases the chances of detecting breast cancer early, when it is most treatable. Regular screenings can catch cancerous tissue even before symptoms appear.
Yes, we require prescriptions for all of our services, including screening mammograms. The results of your mammogram will be sent to your referring physician to support your ongoing care and next steps.
Please bring a prescription to your appointment or have it faxed to 631-588-4595.
Many major insurance carriers cover 3D screening mammograms as a part of preventive care. Coverage of screening mammograms is dependent on your insurance provider and plan. Please contact your insurance provider directly with questions about coverage. If you have any questions about insurance verification or billing procedures, please contact our billing team at (631) 588-4500.
Don’t have insurance? Our facility offers self-pay pricing and a sliding scale for financial hardship. We also participate with the NYS Cancer Services Program. Please call (631) 588-4500 for more information.
Yes, it is safe to get a mammogram with breast implants and having breast implants should not prevent you from getting an annual mammogram. Our technologists are trained to perform exams on women with breast implants to ensure our patients are comfortable as well as obtain quality images.
Please notify our staff when booking your appointment if you have breast implants.
Sometimes, women with silicone implants are recommended to get additional imaging like ultrasounds or diagnostic mammograms. These are used to better visualize the breast tissue since implants can obscure the view of the entire breast with traditional mammography.
The exam should only take around 15 minutes to complete, while the compression will only last a few seconds. During the exam, the technician will help position you at the mammography machine. The machine will apply compression to the breasts while imaging to ensure a clear image is taken. You’ll be able to communicate with the technologist throughout the procedure to ensure your comfort.
Test results are typically available within a week following your appointment and will automatically be sent to your referring doctor. A summary of results will also be mailed to each patient’s given address.
If you would like to speak to the radiologist and have your images read at the time of your appointment, please let our staff know before scheduling your appointment.
If an abnormality is found, you will be contacted to return for additional imaging such as a diagnostic mammogram or breast ultrasound. A diagnostic mammogram is similar to a screening mammogram but it focuses on getting additional views of a specific area of the breast. Your additional imaging will be reviewed by our breast-specialized radiologist, who will share results before you leave your appointment
