Minimally invasive needle biopsy of the breast allows testing and diagnosis of an area of concern detected on a mammogram or breast ultrasound.
Several different types of breast biopsy are offered. An aspiration uses a skinny needle to take samples of fluid or cells. A core biopsy uses a slightly larger needle to extract tissue samples. A needle biopsy using mammography guidance is called a stereotactic needle biopsy. If ultrasound is used, it is called an ultrasound-guided needle biopsy. The exact type of biopsy performed will be tailored to each individual’s situation.
Needle biopsies of the breast are performed with local anesthesia. Most women experience minimal discomfort, and can typically return to their normal activities within 24 hours.
Biopsy results are generally received within 3-7 business days. We call each patient to discuss the results, and to assist with any follow up care that may be needed.
